New Line Cinema’s “The Many Saints of Newark” is the much-anticipated feature film prequel to David Chase’s groundbreaking, award-winning HBO drama series “The Sopranos.”

Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities-and whose influence over his nephew will help make the impressionable teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano.

“The Many Saints of Newark” stars Alessandro Nivola (“Disobedience,” “American Hustle”), Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. (Broadway’s “Hamilton,” “Murder on the Orient Express”), Jon Bernthal (“Baby Driver,” “The Wolf of Wall Street”), Corey Stoll (“First Man,” “Ant-Man”), Michael Gandolfini (TV’s “The Deuce”), Billy Magnussen (“Game Night,” “The Big Short”), Michela De Rossi (“Boys Cry,” TV’s “The Rats”), John Magaro (“The Finest Hours,” “Not Fade Away”), with Emmy winner Ray Liotta (TV’s “Shades of Blue,” “Goodfellas”) and Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air,” “The Conjuring” films).

Alan Taylor (“Thor: The Dark World”), who won an Emmy for his directing work on “The Sopranos,” is helming the film from a screenplay by series creator David Chase & Lawrence Konner, based on characters created by Chase. Chase, Konner and Nicole Lambert are producing the film, with Michael Disco, Marcus Viscidi, Toby Emmerich and Richard Brener serving as executive producers.

Taylor’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Kramer Morgenthau (“Creed II,” “Thor: The Dark World”), production designer Bob Shaw (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “The Sopranos”), Oscar-nominated editor Christopher Tellefsen (“Moneyball,” “A Quiet Place”) and costume designer Amy Westcott (“The Wrestler,” “Black Swan”).

“The Many Saints of Newark” was shot on location in New Jersey and New York, and several beloved characters from the original series that inspired the film are featured in the movie. During its six-season run, “The Sopranos”-widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential television drama series of all time-was honored with 21 Primetime Emmy Awards, five Golden Globe Awards, and two Peabody Awards, to name only a portion.

New Line Cinema Presents, In Association with Home Box Office, a Chase Films Production, “The Many Saints of Newark.” The film is slated for release in theaters nationwide on October 1, 2021 and will be available in the U.S. on HBO Max for 31 days from theatrical release. It is being distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures and has been rated R for strong violence, pervasive language, sexual content and some nudity.

  • So As A Black Man, I didn't understand why this movie is about the come up of the black side of New Wark and not the damn sopranos . when you watch the sopranos, there hardly any blacks taking over the main show. so again some body help me understand, why this movie isn't called the blacks of Newark. Tony Sopranos only 8% of his story made sense.

  • I can sympathize with people who feel like the movie should’ve concentrated more on Tony Soprano. But honestly I think a lot of people don’t like the movie because of the whole Black thing. But how can you make a movie about 60s-80s Newark and not include Black people? I’m honestly against the Blackify & Homosexualize everything movement but I think including Blacks in this movie made the story more truthful because we’re talking about Newark here. It’s just a subject that a lot people don’t like to admit from the 20s - 80s Blacks took over a lot of neighborhoods around the Country from Newark to Harlem. Truth is the truth.

    MikeWillSavedMikeWillSaved2 päivää sitten
    • @Ivan Drago On a second note I do think they overplayed his Character just a bit much. What I’m saying is making a movie about Newark and not including Blacks is like making a movie about LA and not including Hispanics(Mexicans). The movie Training Day is a good example of how to include the truth without overplaying the roles.

      MikeWillSavedMikeWillSaved22 tuntia sitten
    • I sort of agree that the Harold story line and its connections to George Lucas and the Mafia was fine, but not in a Sopranos movie. Then do a movie about Harold interacting with the Mafia and call it Newark 1962. What they did here was advertise a Sopranos movie and do something else. Imagine if a movie got marketed Shaft, all the commercials had Samuel Jackson being Shaft. Then the actual movie was about Dirty Harry.

  • I watched this film & for the main i did enjoy it - but it could have been so very much more - i may be wrong but i believe that this movie was more about profit than art /entertainment - i understand that profit /revenue is very important but let's face it - it was never going to matter how good this film was - it was always going to be successful as the Sopranos was so exceptional that it has a very solid & loyal fan-base, i'm sure that many found it better than myself but i think that a lot of people had the brilliance of The Sopranos in the back of their mind whilst they were watching & this possibly influenced their judgement of the movie - it is very difficult to do but if you could consider The Many Saints Of Newark - as a stand alone film, without being bias & without constantly thinking about the genius of the Sopranos - you may find that by itself - it is a very average film, maybe it just wasn't my cup of tea & others do find it very good but i sincerely doubt that many people will be watching this film more than once unlike The Sopranos - which is definitely an important piece of TV history /culture that never loses its appeal & can be watched again & without getting boring, like i said - maybe it's just me but - Saints of Newark was very disappointing

  • The controversial film has received mixed reviews with very few giving high praise to The Many Saints Of Newark which has gotten The Sopranos series a revival and back in the conversation. Having grown up in Newark, I found the story to be similar in many ways to mine, A Newark Tale - A True Story by Alfred Sonny Piccoli. There were a lot of the authentic details of the buses, drug stores, high school, and other nostalgic references that were spot-on. I don't think the riot scenes actually captured what my perceptions were at the time, but did the job for the general audience. It was not a good feel movie. Racism was certainly a significant part of the city of Newark during the '60s but seeing it on screen in 2021 was disturbing. The opening scenes at the cemetery were creepy. The movie had a lot of twists and turns. The Jersey seaside scene where the two love birds went for a swim with the fishes was memorable. The movie was not easy to follow. One had to concentrate on what was happening and connect the dots into the (future) the Sopranos. Tony's mother had a lot of funny dialog with the best one coming when the guidance counselor asked to speak to her about her son and she said, "only for a minute I've parked next to a hydrant." Yeah, a real concerned parent. I do give the movie a thumbs up and an 80 on the scale. After seeing the movie most will come away with wanting more. I bet a sequel will be forthcoming. In short, you may not like the movie all that much, but it still is a must-see film. Hey, what's a matter for you, I'm from Jersey.

It's like a trick the directors showed us a trailer as if the movie was about young tony but it's not the focus is on Dickie moltisanti and just a glimpse of young Tony. What a waste why don't they just make a movie that's just focused on young Tony.

Like Tony robbing Feech's card game or how Tony B got sent up or how Ralphie, Richie and his brother fit in or at what point they hooked up with Tony and started a crew. I was looking for the movie to answer a lot of things the series spoke about and it wasn't there. The actors were great! It had me watching til the end. I was just sad when the end came and all the subjects I'd hoped they hit on, they didn't even touch. 3.8 of 5 in my opinion.

  • Nice assembly of actors who do a good job however absolutely do not get the story line? This thing looks like it was put together with the goal of just getting it out for a release. Story lines do not flow and are thrown in providing no rhyme or reason for their existence. Also, what is the dual role deal with Liotta? Made me feel like the budget for another actor was pulled so he had to do double duty. And a guy whose been in prison since he’s 25 has all this sage wisdom??? Hopefully more thought and effort will be put into any other sequel. The original series deserves it.
